Why I do not offer Dermaplaining

Dermaplaning( mechanically removing the top layer of your epidermis and shaving your vellus hair) is the latest buzzword in the esthetic industry. And now that the laws have changed in NC, every Amanda, Brittany, and Jennifer will be offering it. (I have a lot of those names in my circle lol)

Trendy skincare procedures come and go, some good, some bad (remember derma rolling?!) Unfortunately, many of these treatments can age you more by exposing you to UV damage and free radicals, cause inflammation by sending your skin out of balance, and cause break-outs.
When I choose a service, modality, or product, my goal is that it Repairs, Replenishes, and Regenerates your skin.

Below are three reasons why I choose not to offer dermaplaning and what services I offer to protect the skin’s barrier function, thus leading to healthier, glowing skin.

  1. I don’t want to age you faster and cause damage
Your epidermis and vellus hair are your natural last layer of protection against UV rays and free radicals. When several layers of skin are mechanically removed instantly, it’s not quite ready to defend you. At Michele Burns Esthetics, we use gentle procedures to aid desquamation (the natural shedding of your skin); we remove them with a chemical peel and /or enzyme. That sounds scary, but it isn’t. Chemical peels gently break down the chemical bonds between the layers of your skin, which happens over the few days after your treatment. Slowing down the removal process allows the bottom layer of your skin to increase cell production, meaning the skin that will become exposed is a little more ready to defend against free radicals and UV rays. Did you know that ALL facials include a chemical peel and/or enzyme at MBE unless not wanted?
  2. I don’t want to cause inflammation
We advise our clients with sensitive skin conditions at Michele Burns Esthetics to avoid any scenario that causes inflammation. Aggressive Mechanical exfoliation can activate the inflammatory response in individuals with rosacea, acne, eczema, or psoriasis and worsen their condition quickly. At Michele burns esthetics, we seek to correct the issue instead of stripping the skin of its natural defenses. We choose modalities and products such as microcurrent and Signal plus to promote healing and reduce inflammation. The electrical stimulation from microcurrent not only increases blood flow to the skin, improving the health of skin cells, but it stimulates collagen and elastin production. Signal Plus is the next step in stem cell technology promoting rapid skin regeneration while providing the nutrients necessary for vibrant healthy skin.
  3. I don’t want to cause break-outs
Dermaplaning should be avoided in individuals with acne-prone or oily skin. Hair on the face serves as a wick for oil to exit the sebaceous gland. Cutting the hair off at the skin level can impede oil secretion, clogging the pore and leading to increased breakouts. If you want to improve your complexion, your best option is to use active ingredients that gently exfoliate but repairs the skin’s barrier defense. I suggest Vit A and Medi-Clear Pads. Vit A gently exfoliates the skin while accelerating cell renewal, while the pads help to control and maintain oil production without over-drying.

Bottom line, I don’t know if I am the right person for you, but I do know that MY goal is to make your skin as healthy as possible; I do this by reinforcing the skin’s health using products and modalities that repair, replenish and regenerate the skin’s barrier system.

Hope to see you in my treatment room soon,
Michele
